Researchers have discovered that those hospitalized for mania were 3.5 more likely than the general public to have consumed cured meats like hot dogs and beef jerky. We’ve long heard of the ill effects nitrates have on the human body and now we have definitive proof of correlation between the substance and erratic behaviour.
Those involved with the study are assuring us that eating cured meats in small doses will not trigger mental illness in the average adult. However, this study supports findings by the World Health Organization in 2015 that processed meats could lead to bowel cancer in humans.
